Hello there. I noticed today that when I try to wget files directly from my wordpress site eg wget http://site.com/wp-content/uploads/file.tar I get a 403 FORBIDDEN error if I have the secure htaccess enabled. When I deactivate Root Folder BulletProof Mode, everything is fine. Any ideas? Can you investigate this?

wget is explicitly blocked in these security filters below.  You can either remove wget from being blocked or a safer method would be to use the lynx command line instead of wget, but if you cannot use lynx for your purposes then you will have to allow wget on your website.

    RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} (havij|libwww-perl|wget|python|nikto|curl|scan|java|winhttp|clshttp|loader) [NC,OR]

    RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} (;|<|>|'|"|\)|\(|%0A|%0D|%22|%27|%28|%3C|%3E|%00).*(libwww-perl|wget|python|nikto|curl|scan|java|winhttp|HTTrack|clshttp|archiver|loader|email|harvest|extract|grab|miner) [NC,OR]

Hi – If I update the htaccess file to allow wget will these changes be overwritten when the plugin is updated?

During a BPS plugin upgrade customizations that you have done to your .htaccess code are not changed, but you can save your modified code to BPS Custom Code to save it permanently.

    1. Copy the modified (wget has been removed from the code below) BPS Query String Exploits code below to this BPS Root Custom Code text box:  CUSTOM CODE BPSQSE BPS QUERY STRING EXPLOITS: Modify Query String Exploit code here
    2. Click the Save Root Custom Code button.
    3. Go to the BPS Security Modes page and click the Root Folder BulletProof Mode Activate button.

    # BEGIN BPSQSE BPS QUERY STRING EXPLOITS
    # The libwww-perl User Agent is forbidden - Many bad bots use libwww-perl modules, but some good bots use it too.
    # Good sites such as W3C use it for their W3C-LinkChecker.
    # Use BPS Custom Code to add or remove user agents temporarily or permanently from the
    # User Agent filters directly below or to modify/edit/change any of the other security code rules below.

Great, thank you!  I tried using lynx on my cpanel but it doesn’t work well with the backup plugin.  Does removing curl from the bps .htaccess create a significant security risk?

Yep, lynx has some limitations so it will not work in a lot of cases depending on what is needed/required/being done.

No, removing curl from the User Agent filter does not create any significant security risk.  cURL used in hacking and spamming scripts works at a different level then what this User Agent filter is designed to do.  The User Agent filters are actually just nuisance filters and not security filters.  They are the same thing as all the “block bad bots” scripts that you see all over the Internet.  😉
