    Hello there.

I recently changed host provider. Before that, I network-disabled BPS Pro (on a multisite) and then left it for the new host to migrate.

The guy who did that later said that he had “disabled” the BPS plugin because it was “stopping access to certain files”. I’m not sure how he ‘disabled’ it because I had already network-disabled it myself but I can ask for clarification later.

Anyway, after the transfer I re-enabled the plugin and ran the 2 setup wizard steps without issue.

Everything appears fine now except the following:

    • The PHP error log path does not match.
    • I am frequently receiving emails saying BPS Pro Alert: AutoRestore is turned Off – yet when I check my settings, AutoRestore is On.

I’m not too fluent in geek-speak so if you could reply in simple terms, that would be appreciated.

    Cheers.

The web host person who disabled BPS may have renamed the AutoRestore plugin file. Try manually reinstalling BPS Pro using the BPS Pro Upload Zip installer, which will replace all BPS Pro files.

Upgrading an existing BulletProof Security Pro Installation (Using the BPS Pro Built-in Upload Zip Installer)
Download the bulletproof-security.zip file from the AITpro.com Secure Download Area. Under the BPS Pro Setup Main menu, click the Upload Zip Install submenu link. Click the Choose File button, navigate to where you downloaded the bulletproof-security.zip file on your computer (Note: the zip file MUST be named bulletproof-security.zip) and click the Install Zip Now button.

For the PHP error log path issue go to the BPS Pro menu > PHP Options menu > PHP Error Log page.  If the “ini_set PHP Error Log Location (Recommended):” path does not match the “PHP Error Log Location Set To:” path then copy the “ini_set PHP Error Log Location (Recommended):” path into the “PHP Error Log Location Set To:” text box and click the Set Error Log location button.

    Thank you for your reply.

Regarding PHP, I copied the ini_set path to the location-path but now I get a different PHP Error:

“A PHP Error has been logged in your PHP Error Log”.

Now underneath the PHP Error Log Location Set To line is another line:

“Error Log Path Seen by Server:” (and then the same address used for both the ini_set path and the location-set path.

On the plus side, further below on that page is a green message that says:

“File Open and Wite test successful! Your PHP Error Log file is writable. Click the View Log button.”

That used to be a red message saying that the Error Log was not writable so that’s a win.

As for the AutoRestore issue, I have uploaded the bulletproof-security.zip file as instructed. It is not enough time yet to know if that will resolve the email notifications I’ve been receiving. It is also not enough time to know if might also resolve the PHP error noted above. I have cleared the “Reset Last Modified Time in DB” button and will note if the PHP error message returns. Meanwhile, if you think the PHP error needs a different angle, please let me know. Otherwise I will bump this post as necessary. Cheers.

The “PHP Error has been logged in your PHP Error Log” message is an alert not an error message. Click the “Click Here” link and click the Reset Last Modified Time in DB button to clear/reset the alert. So the next time a php error occurs on your website then it will be logged in the PHP error log and you will clear that alert again each time you see the alert.  If you don’t want to see the PHP Error Log alert you can turn it off on the BPS Pro > Display & Alerts page.

Also email notifications can sometimes get backlogged in your web host’s mail server queue and are sent later once the mail server queue issue is resolved.

Responding to your last message –

Noted that there can be email lags from server so will wait and see re AutoRestore nag.

I will turn off the PHP nag.

Sorry but I’m back. The AutoRestore turned Off emails haven’t stopped. They appear exactly 2 hours apart.

I had followed your steps re uploading the zip folder.

The option settings for the AutoRestore is off cron job are:

BPS Pro menu > Display & Alert Options > ARQ: When AutoRestore|Quarantine is Turned Off

    Option settings:
    5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 minutes.
    Do not send email alerts.

Have you turned off/disabled WP Crons?  If so, have you setup a Direct cron in your hosting account?  The only correct time interval for Direct Crons is run/process once every 1 minute.  Any other time interval for a Direct cron is incorrect for WordPress.

So what could be happening is you have setup a Direct cron in your hosting account to run every 2 hours, which could cause this problem for BPS Pro cron jobs and will also affect all your other plugin and theme cron jobs.

    Other possibilities:

Not likely > The /wp-content/mu-plugins/bps-pro-mu-tools.php file is an older version and needs to be deleted. When this file is deleted a new bps-pro-mu-tools.php file is automatically created.

More likely > your web host is doing something at the server level that is causing this problem. Something like server-side caching or something that negatively affects WordPress cron jobs.

    Thank you for the advice.

My new host said they couldn’t see any emails being sent from their server so I clicked into the sender details and saw that they were being sent from my old host (via my email address, as listed on WordPress). So I’ve made sure the old site is deleted on the old host, even though that account doesn’t expire for a month. Simple fix in the end.
