HostGator hosting now requires php handler htaccess code in your root htaccess file.  If you are using incorrect php handler htaccess code or are missing php handler htaccess code in your root htaccess file your website will display a 404 Not Found error.

    Steps to fix the problem:
    1. Use FTP or your web host control panel file manager and rename the /bulletproof-security/ plugin folder to: /_bulletproof-security/.
    2. Edit your root htaccess and add the correct php handler htaccess code for your PHP server version. Note: If you do not know what the correct php handler htaccess code is for your PHP server version you will need to contact HostGator support to get that.
    3. Login to your website, go to the WordPress Plugins page, and click the Must-Use link at the top of the Plugins page.
    4. Click the “Turn Off AutoRestore” link to turn AutoRestore Off. Note: If AutoRestore is already turned Off you will see:  “AutoRestore is turned Off” in green font.
    5. Rename the /_bulletproof-security/ plugin folder name back to:  /bulletproof-security/.
    6. Go to BPS Custom Code, click the Root htaccess File Custom Code accordion tab/button.
    7. Copy your php handler htaccess code in this Custom Code text box: 1. CUSTOM CODE TOP PHP/PHP.INI HANDLER/CACHE CODE
    8. Click the Save Root Custom Code button.
    9. Go to the Security Modes tab page and activate Root Folder BulletProof Mode.

See this HostGator help page for more information: https://www.hostgator.com/help/article/how-to-fix-error-after-multiphp-update

Update: You can update your PHP version in your control panel, which should add the correct php handler htaccess code in your root htaccess file > https://www.hostgator.com/help/article/php-configuration-plugin
