I just upgraded to WP 3.6.1. To do so, i briefly deactivated BPS Pro in plugin mgr. Not sure if that was needed but i felt it would be easier and smoother.

When I activate again, i clicked the 4 ARQ buttons and turned off ARQ process and saved. (The auto Q and restore scares me a bit.)

I now get this error “Your Root htaccess File is not Locked“. Any time i go to the security page or the f-lock page, even without clicking buttons, it sets the permissions to 404. The problem is that my host cannot run without group enabled, so it has to be 444.

Every time the permissions are set to 404, the whole site is locked out and i cannot even access the Admin panel.

So what scares me a bit is that these permissions appear to be getting set without me hitting a button. I go to FTP tool and manually add write and then uncheck and save as 444 again to fix the site.   Any ideas?

Since your Host does not allow you to lock your root .htaccess file with 404 permissions then yes you can do this manually via FTP and use 444 permissions.  File locking actually became obsolete after AutoRestore/Quarantine was added to BPS Pro so there is really no need to lock files anymore in BPS Pro.  Locking the root .htaccess file is still a valid method to prevent these common problems:  the flush_rewrite_rules problem and the cPanel HotLink Protection tool problem.

Turn Off AutoRestore, either unlock your root .htaccess file on the htaccess File Editor page and set AutoLock to Off or if you cannot do this from your WP Dashboard then do this manually via FTP while AutoRestore is turned off.

After making changes to files outside of BPS Pro while AutoRestore is Off you will need to click the 4 Backup Files buttons on the AutoRestore page before turning AutoRestore back on otherwise the files will be quarantined.

BPS Pro should never be deactivated or uninstalled for troubleshooting purposes.  BPS Pro is a very advanced plugin and has built-in troubleshooting capabilities.
