Thanks but I can see the autorestore_log is empty so had a look the others and in the bps_php_error.log, there is a long list PHP Fatal errors “Allowed memory size of 26144 bytes exhausted etc, etc” but memory_limit is set to 512 Mb on my VPS. Should I be looking elsewhere than BPS Pro for the cause?

Since you have a VPS server I am going to take a logical guess that your server crashed and you need to reboot your server.  If your website comes back up after rebooting your VPS server then you need to use this Setup Wizard Option setting:  cURL Scan Option: Turn On|Off cURL Scan and set it to:  Turn Off cURL Scan > click the Save cURL|DB Monitor Options button BEFORE running the Wizards again.

No my server hasn’t crashed (not to my knowledge) but a DB on one of the sites became inexplicably and  irreparably corrupted yesterday and as I had no up to-date backup I’m in the process of rebuilding the site when I got locked out.

Ok then most likely the problem has nothing to do with BPS Pro.  You need to backtrack at this point and go over all of your website setup steps.  Completely delete BPS Pro while you are fixing whatever the cause of the problem is on this website.  Delete the /bulletproof-security/ plugin folder and delete the root htaccess file, the wp-admin htaccess file and the /plugins/.htaccess file.  Then continue to fix the website.  You should check these general things:  your wp-config.php file to make sure all of your Database connection information is correct, your database using phpMyAdmin and you probably should reinstall WordPress again.

Ok thanks very much for your advice and sorry for wasting your time with a non BPS Pro problem.

    Hi, as discussed here http://forum.ait-pro.com/forums/topic/uploads-anti-exploit-guard-uaeg-read-me-first/

I now migrated to LiteSpeed on anoter hoster. Everything seemed fine so far but again it’s BPS Pro making me troubles. I love how it works but it’s alwyays a bit of hassle to get it on the feet I completely deactivated everything and even deinstalled it from my old install. So there were no BPS Pro traces anywhere. I also deleted the bps-backup folders.
Went to the new host now and did a clean, fresh install from BPS incl fresh upload.
Everything seemed fine so far but after running several GTMetrix, Pingdom and GooglePageSpeed sights I find the following (only excerpts) and so on and so on. 100s of .js entries from google and gtmetrix that were blocked.
Then I checked plugin firewall whitelist and it is completely empty, which was not the case on old install (but i didn’t do anything there, it was filled during install. So what do now? Go through security list and put every script I find into the whitelist?
    Thanks,
    Thomas

I managed to fix the issues from the first post meanwhile The problem with uploads subfolders remain, with no idea about it

Just one last thing I’m noticing today…on one site that I restored yesterday, none of the images for the BPS admin menu or the BPS security status bar are displaying. When I click one, I get a 500 error. It seems that maybe BPS needs to be reinstalled, but I wanted to check in and see if there is anything else I should check first.

I have another site – one that escaped the madness of the last couple of days – that needs attention from the theme developer (elegant themes) but he cannot log in and his IP tends to change a lot. How can I grant him access to the site so he can get past the 403 Forbidden error on the login page when he tries to access it?

Thank so much for all you do!

@ Hannah – You can reinstall BPS Pro using the BPS Pro upload zip installer under the BPS Pro > Setup Main menu > Upload Zip Install submenu.  A 500 error is very strange.  If an image file is missing you should be seeing a 404 error instead.  So the problem may be something else entirely and reinstalling BPS Pro will not fix whatever is causing that problem.  Maybe also try reinstalling WordPress itself under the Dashboard Main Menu > Updates > Re-Install Now button.

If you have added additional Bonus Custom Code that blocks the WordPress Login page by IP address then you can delete the Root htaccess file via FTP, login to the site, go to Custom Code and either add the additional new IP address for the Theme developer or delete the Bonus Custom Code that protects the WordPress Login page by IP address and then do all of the rest of the Custom Code steps.

Thank you. I just reinstalled BPS AND WordPress, and this odd issue remains. I agree it is strange to see a 500 error when clicking an image with the “broken” icon replacing it. This persisted for a few minutes after reinstalling, but does seem to have resolved itself now. Thank you! I will follow your instructions for letting our support guy into the other site this evening. I hope I do not have to bother you again before the New Year, so I wish you a wonderful holiday season and the best year ever! You deserve it!

Intermittent problems are typically going to be related to things like:  cache/caching plugins/CDN’s/VPN’s/Proxy’s/Load Balancers/Host server problems/Browser problems (corrupt cache, add-on, extension)/ISP (connectivity)/CloudFlare, etc.  Another possibility worth mentioning is that Major CSS changes were made in WordPress 4.4 so clearing your Browser  and plugin cache would be a very good idea.

@ kma2014 – See this AutoRestore|Quarantine Guide Topic link for the procedural steps to use when manually editing files:  http://forum.ait-pro.com/forums/topic/autorestore-quarantine-guide-read-me-first/#procedural-steps

Hi- Is there a way to dismiss or block this notice from appearing on the admin dashboard main page at times when I have ARQ off?  I don’t mind if it appears in the BPS Pro area.

BPS Pro AutoRestore (ARQ) Automatic Shutdown & Backup Notice
ARQ is automatically turned Off during manual WordPress upgrades, new Theme installations and Theme or Plugin upgrades.
For new Theme installations or Theme and Plugin upgrades click the link below AFTER Theme or Plugin installation has completed.
Complete AutoRestore file backup and turn AutoRestore back On.

@ carsafety – That ARQ FailSafe message is very important and means that new files have been installed on your website and they need to be backed up to AutoRestore backup.  To make the ARQ FailSafe message go away click the “Complete AutoRestore file backup and turn AutoRestore back On” link.  Then go to AutoRestore and turn AutoRestore Off if you currently want AutoRestore to be turned Off.  If you do not click the link and turn AutoRestore back On, a catastrophic problem will occur and most likely your website will crash.
